CM takes on MPDA, MMPO

SHILLONG, DEC 10: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said there is an evil design and conspiracy behind the allegations that the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) and Meghalaya Maintenance Public Order (MMPO) are ‘draconian laws.’ He said this allegation is aimed at creating confusion, incite public anger and create law and order situation in the state.

“If the intentions are actually to create confusion and law and order situation then it can be consider as criminal conspiracy,” Sangma said told reporters on Tuesday when asked to react to the campaign challenging the draconian laws in the state.

But Sangma said it has to be first verified whether it is a mollified intention or it just a reflection of lack of knowledge before considering taking any action. He said, “It should be made abundantly clear that any laws that exist in the state for the purpose of regulating people to protect the interest of the state and the common man are in existence and have been in existence for a very long time.”

Sangma also said that the MPDA is not a law enacted by this government but what the present government did was to amend it further to achieve the desire objective for which the law was primarily passed.

On the allegation that the amendment of the MMPO was done only by the cabinet, Sangma clarified, “It should be clarified that no act comes into  force unless it is passed by the state assembly.” –By Our Reporter
