MHIS dispels confusiuon

MHISSHILLONG, JUN 13: Meghalaya health department has directed hospitals empanelled under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) to display the information about the different packages offered under the scheme in their respective institutions after the MHIS came under scathing attack from some aggrieved patients and the confusion over the RSBY and the MHIS.

“In order to dispel all confusions about the scheme, the department has directed the empanelled hospitals to give a broad display of information about the different packages availed under the MHIS,” Meghalaya health & family welfare commissioner & secretary DM Wahlang told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.

The implementation of the MHIS kicked off on May 1 with the ongoing enrollment process of beneficiaries expected to be completed by June 30.

Giving more clarity on the scheme, Wahlang said the MHIS is a scheme which is being implemented together with the RSBY and the Universal Health Insurance Scheme. However, the only difference between the two is that only Rs 30,000 is being provided under the RSBY while the MHIS covers up to Rs 1.60 lakh per household.

Wahlang  said that there are different packages under the scheme that people can avail for different types of ailments. “Government will pay according to the requirement,” the official added.

Pointing out that scheme has been such a blessing to the people, Meghalaya health minister AL Hek informed that the state government has so far made reimbursement of medical expenditures to the tune of Rs 16, 55, 556 for 507 patients across the state from May 1 till June 11.
Hek said, “Of the 507 patients who have availed the scheme’s benefitmore than 10 are cancer related patients” adding “The whole concept of the scheme is designed to reduce the burden on medical expenditures on the people of the state.”

The department also informed that it has rejected the claims of 22 cases including three alcoholics’ cases, one suicide case while 10 cases were rejected due to failure to produce the MHIS bio-metric cards during admitting in the hospitals. “There are cases which have been rejected due to mismatch of finger prints,” Wahlang informed.

Meanwhile, the state government is contemplating to rope in more hospitals under the MHIS from across state and outside the state.

“We would soon revised the rates of the packages under the schemes in order to rope in more hospitals under the scheme for the benefit of the people of the state,” Wahlang said admitting that due to low rates of the packages most of the hospitals in the state refused to get themselves empanelled under the scheme.- By Our Reporter
