No more status quo: KSU

SHILLONG, JUNE 13: The North Khasi Hills unit of the KSU on Thursday demanded a positive solution in the Assam Meghalaya chief secretary level meet on boundary dispute due this month and not the continuity of the status quo.“Meghalaya is the only side that has maintained the status-quo which is not being replicated by Assam,” said North Khasi hills KSU president NKH Ferdinal Kharkamni soon after the student delegation met the state home minister Roshan Warjiri on Thursday.

Stating that despite various efforts and several  round talks between the two state governments, solution to the age old boundary dispute is nowhere in sight, Kharkamni said,

“We have seen the CS level meet ends with both sides agreeing to maintain status quo at the disputed area and Assam ends up violating the status quo time and again,” said Kharkamni.

Citing instances of the toll gate erected by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council, (KADC) and setting up of bank and toll gate by Assam in block –I and II area of Ri-bhoi district, Kharkamni said that the government has delayed and failed to address the issue in right earnest even with instances of encroachment and violation of status-quo surfacing every now and then.

“We strongly oppose this,” Kharkamni added.

“Setting up of bank is just a ploy of the Assam government to project Sabuda as a part of Assam,” said Kharkamni.-By Our Reporter
