Cong Mahila to fight BJP

SHILLONG, MAY 1: The Congress is activating its Mahila committees across the north eastern region including Meghalaya to fight the alleged anti-people ideologies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“We will launch awareness campaigns against the BJP’s ideologies to ensure that it is prevented from entering the NE region,” All India Mahilla Congress (AIMC) president Shoba Oza told reporters on Friday.

Oza arrived in the state’s capital to address the State Mahila’s Meet of the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC). She, however, said, “The ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does not match with the beauty of north eastern region.”

According to Oza, the people in the north east would not like a party (BJP) which is communal, less tolerance for other religions and pluralism. She said, “Here in the NE, people respect each other’s tribe and religion.”

Oza warned that the Mahila Congress will launch agitational programme against the ideology of the BJP and educate the people on this through the awareness programmes.

She added, “There is going to be a battle on ideological.”

Oza during her meeting with functionaries of the mahila committees from across Meghalaya have also highlighted the financial difficulty besides other problems faced by the women before the AIMC president.

On this, Oza said, “I have instructed the committee here to form self help group (SHGs) to empower the women folks.”

While not being able to give the number of members in Mahila Committee in the state, Oza informed that soon the membership drive of the Mahila will start.

During the meeting, AIMC secretary Shanaz Y Haque emphasized on the need for the women to raise their voices against violence and crimes against women.

Referring to report that states in NE has less domestic rape because such cases are not reported, Haque said, “The Mahila here should encourage the women to come forward and report such crimes.”

Stating that women are the strongest and largest voters in the country, Haque stressed on the need to educate women in NE on the importance of the Congress party at the national level as well as in NE region.-By Our Reporter
