SHILLONG, NOV 28: Congress on Monday staged a protest against what it termed as ‘monumental mismanagement of demonetisation’ by the BJP led NDA union government which it claimed has created a “mess”.

Organized by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Dhankheti, the protest saw the participation of MPCC president DD Lapang, Sports minister Zenith Sangma, former health minister AL Hek, KHADC former CEM Manstudy Nongrem, former Dy CEM PT Sawkmie, JHADC deputy CEM A Shullai and party workers.

Some of the placards carried by the Congress protestors during the demonstration read – “Scrapping of Rs 500 & Rs 1000 notes why common people suffer?”, “What will people eat – ATM cards?/Plastic Money?”, “India needs Demodisation”, “Demonisation & Demonisation of hard earned money”.

Speaking to reporters at the sideline of the protest, Lapang said, “We do not accept the style, the timing and the unpreparedness of the implementation of demonetisation which has hit poor people.”

Maintaining that the Congress do not support black money, he, however, said that black money should be rooted out but the time, the system, the under preparedness of the government has hampered economically destablised common man.

He claimed that the Congress protest represents the grievances and problems faced by the poor people including farmers’ community.

“Lots of farmers, patients, students, parents and others are facing problems due to this,” he said while pointing out that many marriage ceremonies could not take place and some people were even forced to commit suicide.

Terming the BJP drive against black money as anti-poor, Lapang informed that the Congress will continue to protest if the centre delays in taking remedial measures and address the problems.

He informed that the campaign against the BJP government will begin from tomorrow across the state, which will be taken out at the district and block level committees of the party.

When inquired, Lapang reiterated that the drive by Prime Minister against black money is not bad but the timing shows its immaturity.

On the other hand, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma accused the BJP led NDA government for messing up by creating problems for the poor.
