SHILLONG, JULY 8: The Meghalaya High Court on Friday directed issuing of notice to the newly elected Tura Member of Parliament (MP) Conrad K Sangma following a petition filed Mahendraganj Congress legislator Dikkanchi D Shira.

In an order issued here on Friday, Justice SR Sen said, “Issue notice to the respondent to show cause as to why this instant petition should not be taken up for consideration or any other order or orders should not be passed as found deemed fit and proper.”

The court said that the notice is made returnable within three weeks.

The counsel for the petitioner KC Mittal was also directed to take necessary steps to serve the notice upon the respondent. “List this matter after 3 weeks for written statement and further order,” Sen stated in his order.

Sources informed that Shira, also wife of the chief minister Mukul Sangma, filed the petition against Conrad on matter related to the allegations made by him during the election campaign of the just concluded Tura Lok Sabha bye-election.

According to sources, Conrad, also the national president of the National People’s Party (NPP), had in one of his election campaigns alleged that the state government has failed to submit utilization certificate for MGNREGA schemes amounting to Rs 300 crore to the centre.-By Our Reporter
