SHILLONG, JULY 8: Legendary musician and singer from Shillong, Lou Majaw has been selected for the prestigious ‘Bhupen Hazarika Award’ for rendering an outstanding work at the national and international level.

Majaw is the lone musician from the entire north east, who have been selected by the selection committee of the Sarhad, which has been honoring persons from the region with the prestigious award ever since 2012.

Born in Mawlai Phudmawri, Shillong on April 1947, Majaw’s first encounter with the guitar was in 1955 at The Sacred Hearts Boys Boarding School. Moving on to Don Bosco Technical School in 1959 to learn tailoring, he spent the next three years till 1962 playing guitar and side drum, genis, sax and trumpet in the school orchestra.

After this, Majaw performed in the bands that he spearheaded, The Fentones, Super Sound Factory, Blood and Thunder, Sons of Adam, Eleventh Commandment, the Underdog Band, Autumn Dogs, Great Society, Meghalaya Love Project and currently Lou Majaw and Friends.

“This year’s Bhupen Hazarika Award is being conferred to such an illustrious musician par excellence, Lou Majaw, at a ceremony in Pune in October,” Founder president of Sarhad Sanjay Nahar saidin a statement on Friday.

The award is aimed at creating a strong bond between Maharashtra with North East. It consists of Rs 51, 000, a memento and a certificate.-By Our Reporter
