Contest of actual UCC Bill yet to be known: CM

SHILLONG, JULY 3: “The idea of having a uniform civil code (UCC) is something that if not discussed with all stakeholders and with everybody to look into all factors then it is something very complicated and it is something which people of the North East will not be able to accept,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Monday.

Stating that the actual content of the UCC Bill is yet to be known, Sangma said, “As I said we have to see the content and if there are enough provisions that protect us then obviously then we can discuss more about it and see how to move forward but till then it is difficult to comment as really have not seen what it is and we are still talking about the concept we are not talking about an actual Bill.”

Referring to his statement made recently, the chief minister said that he had mentioned the concept of the UCC. “But now we have to see the actual content of the Bill and only then can we comment on what it is,” he said.

“For example, if the Bill comes out tomorrow and the Bill says that the ST and SC of certain areas or the NE will be exempted from this, we have to see the content, will they cover issues and if they say our society is following matrilineal system will be exempted – so we really don’t know the content of the Bill,” he added.
