Cooperative’s products

SHILLONG, JAN 8: A day long exhibition cum sales of cooperative products of the cooperative societies in Garo hills district was held as a part of the 100 Days festival of the Meghalaya government at Police parade ground in Tura.

The exhibition cum sale of the products of cooperative societies was organized to showcase the talent, skills and contributions of the cooperatives and to provide platform for the cooperatives to display and to market their products, increase public awareness about cooperatives and their contributions to socio economic development and achievement.

West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi, who was the chief guest,   said that cooperative movement is vibrant as it can mobilize the people and empower them thus reducing their dependence on many other things. He also stated that cooperatives improve livelihood and strengthen the economy while enabling sustainable development.

Earlier in her address, Cooperative Societies, Shillong joint registrar R Kharmujai informed that the cooperative movement has spread to diverse communities and sectors from agriculture, fisheries and livestock to cooperative banking and credit unions, housing, healthcare to mutual and cooperative insurance. She also informed that at present there are 321 cooperative societies in composite Garo hills region.

Around thirty registered cooperative societies from all over Garo hills participated in the exhibition displaying and selling their products.

West Garo hills assistant registrar of Cooperative Societies BP Modak, JR Marak, Chairman of Tura Urban Cooperative Bank Ltd and Mukul Das, cooperator were among others who spoke at the inaugural function.- By Our Reporter
