SHILLONG, FEB 13: In what is turning out to be a high profile case of investigation into the mysterious death of Sub Inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, who was the office-in- charge of Patharkhma police station, the Meghalaya police Special Investigation Team (SIT) exhumed his body on Friday and conducted a five hours long post mortem to ascertain his death.

A team of doctors from the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), conducted the five hours long post mortem at the Catholic church cemetery at Umpling. The body was exhumed in the presence of the police, doctors, family members, friends, ngos  and the media.

Samples from the post mortem will be sent for forensic examination.

On January 24, Marbaniang was found critically injured with a gunshot on his head in his official quarter. He rushed to Nongpoh and Patharkhmah  hospitals but was declared death on arrival.

Ri Bhoi police claimed that Marbaninag had committed suicide by shooting himself with the service revolver but his family members refused to accept the police version and alleged that he was killed.

That the incident took place a day after Marbaniang had detaining several illegal coal trucks raised many eyebrows.

Marbaninag’s wife, Chaleth Pyngrope dismissed the police claim of suicide of her husband and instead filed an FIR in the Nongpoh police station suspecting foul play into her husband’s death.

The state government immediately constituted the two men SIT team headed East Khasi hills district city SP Vivek Syiem to investigate into the death of Marbaniang and submit its report within ninety days.

Friday’s was the second postmortem examination on the body late Marbaniang. Syiem  told reporters that the  samples are required to be sent for forensic.  He, however, refused to divulge where the samples will be send but added, ,“The samples will be sent to an appropriate place.”

Syiem hoped that the forensic will submit its reports at the earliest so that the SIT can ascertain more facts about  the case.

Asked whether the case would be given top priority, Syiem said, “Yes, We have to go to the fact of the matter, we will go deep into the case.” He also said that as of now the field is very wide as the investigation process is on but it get narrow down as the probe progress.

Meanwhile, late Marbaniang’s wife Chaleth Pyngrope expressed faith in the investigation team. “I hope that the team will bring out the truth. I want the truth and nothing but the truth,” she said.- By Our Reporter
