SHILLONG, FEB 13: Now the legend of a Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing is being revived through the latest technology via the world of “animated movie” by some tech savvy youths of the state. The animated movie “U Syiem”, the first ever to be initiated in Meghalaya as well as North East, will be released in March.

A group of young talented youths came together and decided to coming up with a movie aimed to revive and tell the story of valour of the legendary Khasi freedom in the state and beyond its boundaries.

“The core idea of the movie ‘U Syiem’ is to bring historic back and educate the world about our culture using animation, a powerful medium to spread the message,” Ban Casper Mawlong, who is the movie director and writer told reporters.

Twenty-eight years old Mawlong, who has over ten years experience in animation, said that the 60 minutes animation movie tells a story about life of the legendary King U Tirot Sing who bravely fought the British rulers.

U Tirot Singh, the tribal Khasi chief of Nongkhlaw Kingdom, was the first tribal Khasi ruler to rebel against the British empire in 1829. However, on January 13, 1833 the British forces treacherously captured him and kept him in captivity at Dhaka where he died on July 17, 1835.

“The movie is also educational in nature. Our purpose is to make U Tirot Sing Syiem, the hero of the present day generation,” Mawlong said. The movie is not cartoon but semi realistic and is made for universal age group, he informed.

Mawlong  said the movie will be release first time on March 5 followed by two day screening for public on March 6-7.

The screening of the movie will take place at U Soso Tham auditorium at 1 pm, 3.30 pm and 6 pm.

“We are also planning to screen the movie in at least over 100 schools,” Mawlong said.

Mawlong informed that it took the team (about 40 members) three years to complete the movie at a low budget cost of Rs 33 lakh.

Interestingly, the team formed among a circle of friends and interested artists, had not approach any sponsors but made the animation movie with their money which was a joint saving.

These ambitious youths who are animated enthusiasts pointed out that lack of infrastructure is the main problem faced by them during the making of the movie besides finance.

Mawlong said, “We cannot vouch for showing the movie on big screen as we need a lot financial assistance to do that .” He appealed to members of the public to come and watch the movie.

The rate of tickets has been fixed at Rs 150 and Rs 200 which will be made available in all the Aircel outlets.- By Our Reporter
