Court charges militant leader with waging war

Shillong, Nov 8: The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate B Giri Thursday  charged Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion R Sangma with waging war against India by forming the outlawed) outfit.

The court also passed an order saying that the trial will begin soon and fixed the next hearing on November 22.

Giri informed that the militant lead has been charged under Section 121 IPC for starting an organisation which is waging war against the nation. In her order, Giri said,

“For conspiring, abetment… incites, directs or knowingly facilitates the GNLA causing terror acts and other unlawful activities, you are charge Under Section 18, 16 and 38 (i) and (ii).”

The renegade Meghalaya police officer turned militant was arrested on July 30 at the International border, hours after he was pushed back by Bangladesh authorities.

The GNLA has declared an outlawed organisation by the union home ministry  and has been known to have forged an operational alliance for procuring arms and ammunition with the ULFA and the NDFB enabling the
outfit to unleash a reign of terror in Garo Hills region. – By Our Reporter
