CSWO to Govt : Provide women hawkers’ a space

Shillong, August 21: Even as it took a potshot at the urban affairs department and the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), the Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO) has demanded that the women selling kwai, fruits and other items at the congested Khyndailad be accommodated at the abandoned park next to the OB Shopping Mall.

In a letter submitted to Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma Tuesday, the CSWO took umbrage at the government for allotting rich businessmen space for opening up restaurants in the parking space of MUDA by flouting rules, while these women hawkers who are single mothers are neglected, rather thrown out by the municipal every time a checking is made.

The CSWO felt that the government is duty bound to provide these indigenous women, who are mostly single mothers, with a space that is not only going waste but also being used for nefarious activities. It, therefore, demanded that the government allot the abandon park and enable these women to earn their livelihood. – By Our Reporter
