Dhar inspects accident prone national highway

inspectSHILLONG, SEPT 6: A day after four people who were killed when an overloaded truck crashed into an rickshaw near Nongpoh, Meghalaya PWD Minister Sniawbhaland Dhar conducted an inspection of the entire four project along with the NHAI  and implementing agencies and sought early completion of the project

Dhar accompanied by Umsning legislator  and other officials inspected the entire stretch from Umiam till Jorabat and showed various stretches along the road which are accident prone.

The IL&FS, which is the concessionaire of the project, also agreed to take all preventive measures and repair the  bumpy stretches of the road  to avoid similar accidents in future.

Dhar during the inspection expressed his concern over the slow pace of construction of Umiam-Jorabat project and asked the implementation agencies to expedite the construction work since people suffers a lot while travelling on the national highway.

Later talking to reporters , project Director Umiam-Jorabat Expressway Vinod Tripathi said that the IL&FS has now given the responsibility of the project to other agencies-NKC and YFC .

When pointed out on the poor condition of road that led to the death of four people, Tripathi said that the implementing agencies are trying to continuously maintain the road.

The project was taken away from the Ramky Infrastructure Limited since the progress of the project was not satisfactory.

The ongoing four laning project was completely halt for many months but Vinod Tripathi says that the work could not take place due to the rainy season.

Dhar , on the other hand, admitted that the implementation of the project slow  and directed the implementing agencies to take the project seriously to ensure the completion of the project within the deadline of March 2014.

Dhar, however, said that the project cannot be termed as delayed since the project still is yet to cross its deadline. The tender cost of project is Rs 536 crore.-By Our Reporter
