SHILLONG, SEPT 6: Even as police have arrested three persons, among who two have been identified as Lam Dympep and Teibor Rani, for blocking the road at Mawlai, Umjaiur at around 10 pm on Thursday during the road blockade called by ngos to press for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has also announced a one day strike on Monday to put pressure on the government to implement the ILP.

A day after chief minister Mukul Sangma had rejected the suggestion for implementing the ILP in the state to control illegal migration during the all political parties meet on Thursday, the KHNAM decided to stage a one day strike to protest against government reluctant to implement the ILP in the state.

Sangma had on Thursday said the ILP is an “outdated, redundant law” which is incapable of controlling influx into the state.

KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum on Friday said, “We have decided to call for one day strike on September 9, to express our resentment on the reluctance of the state government to introduce the ILP system in state which was also recommended by the High Level Committee on Influx last year.”

The proposed strike will be held at the state central library premises from 10 am to 4 pm.

According to Nongrum this is the first agitation to be launch by the party and it will be followed by others later. Saying that the government lack political will to introduce the ILP he informed that the KHNAM do not want to hold anymore talks on the issue with the government. He was of the opinion that clearly the state government is not in favour of the ILP and hence he said agitation is the only path left to pressurize the government.

Nongrum said the strike apart from the ILP issue has been called to protest against the adamant attitude of the state government towards the demands of the teaching fraternity in the state.

Ridiculing the Congress, Nongrum said, “The Congress in its manifesto spoke grandiosely about the welfare of the teaching community in the state but its attitude is just the opposite.” He even questioned the state government that how it can expect quality teaching only by conducting training when its teachers are paid less which forced them to take to the streets.

Meanwhile, the pro-ILP ngos have decided to intensify its agitation by announcing office picketing in the entire state on September 7.-By Our Reporter
