Direct govt to check univ credential: KSU to Guv

DSC_0024SHILLONG, JUNE 7: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Friday asked the Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary to direct the state government to conduct an enquiry into credentials of all the private universities established in the state.

The student body made the request during its meeting with Mooshahary along with the CMJ University students at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

The need for scanning the credentials of the private universities follows the irregularities and anomalies in the CMJ University which has affected hundreds of students studying in the institute after the degree certificates awarded by the university so far were asked to be withdrawn and derecognize by Mooshahary- who is the university Visitor.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “We have urged the Governor to direct the state government on the need to conduct an enquiry against all the private universities set up in the state.”

On his part Mooshahary also assured the delegation that he would explore the possibility to rehabilitate and accommodate the affected students of the CMJ University in other institutes.

Khyriem said the recent CMJ University controversy has brought a bad name to Meghalaya which was known as the ‘educational hub’ in the region. He said, “People have lost faith in the universities in Meghalaya.”

Khyriem also said that the union does not want another CMJ university to come up in the state and the state government must take a stand on the issue.

On the other hand the affected students of the CMJ University said the reasons for joining the CMJ University is that they trusted the university as in its website it has showed that it is a recognized university and was establishment through an act passed by the Meghalaya government.

Khyriem told reporters that the union underscore with Mooshahary  the need to conduct inspections before private institutions are allowed to set up their campus in the state and should refrain them from uploading details about their institutions if they are yet to be recognized.

On Wednesday the Director of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) had asked the students of the CMJ university to submit their particulars with supporting documents to the office of the DHTE at additional secretariat from June 7-17 for the purpose of examining the feasibility of accommodating them in other institutions.-By Our Reporter
