Doctor among 2 succumb to COVID-19

SHILLONG, NOV 20: Two more persons including a doctor have succumbed to COVID-19 taking the number of fatalities to 106 on Friday even as 173 new positive cases were also detected.

77-year-old Limos S Majaw, a resident of Pynthorbah, Shillong passed away at the Dr H Gordon Robert’s hospital while 66-year-old Dr Paitbha Syngkon died at the Woodland hospital on Thursday, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.

He said Majaw was tested positive for COVID-19 on being admitted in the hospital on November 16 adding that the cause of death was due to COVID-19 with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), hypertension, hypothyroidism and moderate anaemia.

Dr Syngkon was tested COVID-19 positive on being admitted at the hospital on Thursday night. “He (Dr Syngkon) however passed away at 11.50 pm due to COVID-19 pneumonia with type 2 diabetes mellitus with hypertension with CAD,” Dr War said.

Dr Syngkon was a resident of Panaliar Jowai in West Jaintia Hills.

Dr War said the 173 new cases include 97 from East Khasi Hills district, 60 West Garo Hills district, 8 South Garo Hills district, 4 East Jaintia Hills district, 2 East Garo Hills district, 1 Ri Bhoi district and 1 South West Garo Hills district.

He said those tested positive also include 12 from St Peter School in West Garo Hills, 7 health workers from East Khasi Hills, 7 armed forces/paramilitary forces that include 5 from East Khasi Hills, 1 Ri Bhoi and 1 South West Garo Hills, 2 police personnel of which one is from East Khasi Hills and 1 from South Garo Hills.

Of the 84 persons who recovered from the viral infection, Dr War said 41 are from Ri Bhoi, 19 East Khasi Hills, 10 East Jaintia Hills, 4 South Garo Hills, 4 West Garo Hills, 3 South West Garo Hills, 1 South West Khasi Hills, 1 North Garo Hills and 1 East Garo Hills.

So far, the state has detected a total of 11,152 COVID-19 cases out of which 888 are active cases, 10,158 recovered and 106 deaths.

Of the total active cases, East Khasi Hills has 400 positive cases, West Garo Hills 195, East Garo Hills 91, Ri Bhoi 64, South West Garo Hills 29, South Garo Hills 28, West Khasi Hills 26, East Jaintia Hills 23, West Jaintia Hills 22 and North Garo Hills 10.

South West Khasi Hills has been declared as a district with zero cases after recovery of one patient.

“Till date, swab samples of 2,27,199 persons have been tested of which 2,16.047 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.

There are 60,758 entrants from outside the state.
