Twin agitations continues

SHILLONG, AUG 27: Twin agitations continued in the Garo Hills region for the fourth working days on Tuesday as the All Garo Hills SET Passed Teachers Association (AGHSETPTA) and the Garo Hills State Monitoring Committee (GHSMC) continued their protests demanding two separate demands.

The AGHSETPTA is demanding for the termination of teachers who were appointed through the backdoor denying them the job that they deserved as they had qualified for appointment for teachers job but were overlooked. On the other hand the GHSMC is demanding separate Garo state.

The agitation of AGHSETPTA will end on Wednesday.

The GHSMC, however, will continue to demonstrate outside the office of the Deputy Commissioners of West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills.

The demand for a separate state resumed on Monday with a sit in demonstration in front of the offices of the DCs of the three districts. The demand has been for the creation of a new state for the Garos on a linguistic basis.

The GHSMC argued that the demand is to ensure the identities and culture of the Garos can be protected in a new state only.

Both the agitating associations are likely to intensify their agitations if the Meghalaya government fails to meet their demands.- By Our Reporter
