Fight for separate state resumes in GH

GARO STATESHILLONG, AUG 26:   Continuing its fight for a separate Garo state in Meghalaya, the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) along with the Garo National Council (GNC) started its sit in demonstration in Tura, Williamnagar and Baghmara where a number of people including college students participated on Monday.

GHSMC general secretary Augustine R Marak told reporters, “We had a successful beginning and we hoped that more people will join our sit in demonstration to push through with our demand.”He, however, claimed that the GHMSC has not used any students to take part in the agitational programmes.

The West Garo Hills district administration has prohibited students from taking part in any agitation called in demand for a separate Garo state, in line with the spirit of the Right to Education Act.

Marak said, “We have not forced any student to come and participate in our programmes, but today college student took part in the sit in demonstration.”

The approval for creation of the new state of Telangana and widespread agitations in the different parts of the county have prompted the people in the Garo hills region to also voice their demand for a separate Garo state.

The GHSMC that included the Achik Student’s Welfare Association (ASWA), Tura Government College Students Union (TGCSU), All India Garo Union (AIGU) and senior citizens had earlier organised a two-day sit in demonstration in Tura on August 6 and 7 and a 12-hour bandh in all the five districts of Garo Hills on August 8 demanding bifurcation of Meghalaya on linguistic lines.-By Our Reporter
