SHILLONG, JULY 4: The Jaintia Students Union (JSU) on Monday said its demand for recognizing Pnar language, which is largely spoken by the people of Jaintia hills region, should not be misunderstood as a move to create any kind of division among the Khasi-Jaintia community.
The statement was made on the backdrop of a reaction by a member of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) Jaintia hills unit N Sutnga who felt that the demand of the JSU is designed to divide the indigenous community.
“The demand of the union should not be misunderstood as the objective of fighting but it should be understood that Pnar language gets its recognition to preserve and promote the language of our tribe,” JSU president Rikut N Parien said in a statement on Monday.
He said that the Pnar language, which is yet to get any kind of official recognition, is widely spoken by the people residing in the two districts – West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills of the region.
Refuting the allegation of the KSU-JHU, Parien said that the language is also used not only by the pnar families but even in dorbar meetings convened by the different traditional institutions.
“Therefore we urged the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), its CEM, EMs and MDCs besides the MLAs from the two districts to consider taking steps to ensure the pnar language is preserved,” Parien said.-By Our Reporter
