NEIGRIHMS to be rejuvenated: Ahangar

Shillong,Nov 6: The newly appointed North Eastern Indira Gandhi Research Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) director Dr AG Ahangar said this super specialty medical institute  is a derailed and defunct institute that needs urgent repair to put back on its track.

Ahangar told reporters at a news conference Tuesday, “There is a need to rejuvenate and revitalized the system in order to create a true ‘Island of Excellence”

Ahangar is a cardiac and open heart surgeon and has been selected by the union ministry of health and family welfare from among the thirty-five probable by the Competent High Power Selection Committee.

Ahangar said now he has come with a mission to make NEIGRIHMS live up to the expectations of the entire north eastern region.

“Being away from home, friends, colleagues, profession and his first love ‘Open Heart Surgery’, I have sacrificed all these for the cause of NEIGRIHMS and to work for this mission” Dr. Ahangar informed.

Ahangar also said that his main priorities now are to set in motion the post doctoral, post graduate, under graduate, diploma and para medical courses in a way to bring excellence in patient care, develop an institutional work culture of excellence, bring rigorous discipline and punctuality in work force and completion of unfinished tasks and projects including human resource development in the field of health care.

“Infrastructure upgradation is also important in order to reach out to the needy population of the north eastern region and special efforts to reach out to the weaker sections of the society as even a common man living on the street should receive equal treatment and equal health care facilities as those living in high society” Dr. Ahangar said.

He also said that social outreaching programmes like health education, awareness programmes and social camps should be conducted from time to time so as to reach out to the people and improve visibility and perception of NEIGRIHMS in the service of the people at large.

Dr. Ahangar also informed that the staff would be directed to educate people on the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, smoking, chewing of beetle nut etc as this would reduce the burden that the institution would face”

“The ultimate goal is to bring NEIGRIHMS to the level of a Global Level University with its impact on for ‘Medi-tourism’ in the north east” Dr. Ahangar concluded.- By Our Reporter
