Shilling, Nov 7: Despite the improving literacy rates of the state, Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary rued that the crime rates, especially against women, is increasing. He said that Meghalaya literacy rates have gone up to sixty-seven percent but along with it crime rates have unfortunately increased.

Addressing the 62nd foundation day of the Bharat Scout & Guides held at the Raj Bhavan Wednesday, Mooshahary was of the opinion that unless we are able to build up people of good character, the literacy rate no matter how high it gets, will be of no use.The foundation day was attended by hundreds of scout & guides from the different districts of Meghalaya.

Mooshahary  also lamented about the poor “work-ethic” in the country which he felt is very poor causing stagnation to  the “development” and “progress” of the region.  He observed,  “India has too many ‘holidays’ and this calls for reformation for a better work culture.” According tohim holidays are not the only way for celebrations of an event or festivals.  HeHe suggested that festival of a particular community or region must be given to only those who celebrate and not to everyone.

Earlier, Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, who is also the president of the Meghalaya Bharat Scout & Guides,  informed on the recent decision taken by the state government to recognize and give a special marking system for the members of the Scout & Guides who are opting for police profession.

Pariat told the gathering, “This is a recognition given by the government for the performance of the scout & guides having the qualities such as discipline and sense of duty which is needed in the police force.”

Altogether, forty-five scouts and fifteen guides from different schools of Meghalaya were awarded with the Rajya Puraskar Award for their excellent performance.
