‘Driver wrongly implicated’

SHILLONG, FEB 15: Criticism over the recent booking of a tourist-taxi driver under a section related to ‘attempt to murder’ is growing louder as the action is being viewed as misused and abused of powers.

The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) on Monday demanded immediate release of the tourist-taxi driver and compensation be paid for the alleged illegal detention which tantamount to human right violation.

“We strongly condemned the misuse of power by the police who have wrongly implicated a youth detaining him illegally alleging he tried to kill the chief minister. The law enforcers should be upholding the law and not breaking it,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said in a statement on Monday.

She said, “We demand the immediate release of the driver and the truth to be brought out and a compensation, for the illegal detention which is a human right violation.”

According to her, action should also be taken against the erring police officials who have misled public at large and who have misused their power to hide the truth.

Jeskalur L Mawdoh, the driver of the tourist-taxi (ML 04 A 3374), which hit the official vehicle of chief minister Mukul Sangma last week, was remanded to 3-day police custody and booked under section 307 IPC.

Sangma, who was on his way to the helipad, was not injured during the incident.

Kharshiing further pointed out that the in the accident that occurred on February 11, it is very strange that a driver who was driving the Mahindra Max which was full of passengers was wrongfully detained due to lies and abused and misused of power by police covering up the rash and negligent driving of the chief minister’s driver.

“The CM’s car is not even seen anywhere and no photograph brought out by the police to establish their claim that this youth tried to kill the CM. it is also notice that they allowed the car of the CM to go away without an MVI report prepared at the place of occurrence,” she said.

Stating that this is sheer misused of the law by the enforcers who are too worried of their transfer, Kharshiing said, “This high handedness by VIPs whose rashness is endangering many is strongly opposed and VIPs do not enjoy privilege to endanger lives of public.”

She is also of the opinion that law is equal to all as enshrined by the Constitution and such abused and misused of power is not tolerated by the general public who at times have to keep quit to all this high handedness due to pressure from some corrupt police official, who action shame their own force.

“According to MVI report available with the organization, it was noted that there was rash and negligent driving but did not state who drove rashly and negligently and this clearly indicates that the rash and negligent driving could have been by the CM’s driver,” she alleged.

Meanwhile, the CSWO also requested the passengers of the Mahindra Max and the general public who were witnessed to the accident to contact the organization and inform with regard to the accident wherein the youth has been wrongly implicated with attempt to murder the chief minister.- By Our Reporter
