SHILLONG, JUNE 28: Custom sleuths on Tuesay seized huge cache of heroin and amphetamine tablets worth over Rs 3 crore and
arrested three hardcore smugglers including a woman along with arms from the city.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the big consignment of this magnitude is exclusively meant for Shillong and other parts of the state.
Acting on a tip off, officials of the custom department conducted raids in one of the hotels located in Khyndailad area, a commercial hub in the heart of the state‘s capital, and arrested the smugglers at around 2 pm.
High quality heroin weighing 1kg and over 20,000 amphetamine tablets packed in 100 blue sachets besides a pistol with two live ammunition were seized from their possession.
Terming the seizure as one of the biggest, Deputy Commissioner of Custom Preventive, North East Region, Isaac Kharkongor told reporters that the market value of the consignment is worth around Rs 3 crore.
He said the heroin, which is 99 percent pure is worth around Rs 1 crore while the tablets which cost Rs 1,000 each are worth around Rs 2 crore. According to him, the seizure had prevented the smugglers from reaching out to small time retailers in the state.-By Our Reporter
