SHILLONG, JULY 31: As Meghalaya falls under the ‘Seismic Zone V’ and therefore prone to earthquake,    one day “School Children Sensitization Workshop on “Earthquake Hazard and Safety Essential” was organized at U Soso Tham Auditorium to inculcate the habit of earthquake safety in the youngsters.

The sensitization workshop was organized jointly by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat, State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Meghalaya and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills district which was sponsored by the National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India.

State’s Revenue and Disaster Management principal secretary PK Srivastava,  graced the occasion as the chief guest which was also attended by PS Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, HB Marak, Executive Officer, SDMA, officials from DDMA , SDMA and students drawn from 80 schools from the district.

Earthquake don’t kill, building kill” said Srivastava while speaking as the chief guest and underscored the need for the people of the region, especially the children, to be aware that the north eastern region lies in a high risk earthquake zone.

He expressed hope that the sensitization workshop conducted by the experts will help students gain new knowledge about earthquake hazards and basic awareness on preparedness, mitigation and response measures and precautions to equip them better to minimize damage during occurrence of earthquake and other disasters.

During the day power point presentation was made on the topics of Science of Earthquake & NER Seismicity and Earthquake & Essential of Safety by RS Saxena, former team coordinator, NDMA and Dr HK Vinayak, Professor, NIT, Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. S Bordoloi, Consultant and the SDMA give a power point presentation on Disaster Management in Meghalaya.

Later on the day, practical demonstration session on Fire Safety, Search and Rescue, First Aid was conducted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) followed by question and answer session.- By Our Reporter
