SHILLONG, JULY 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) is demanding setting up of a Regulatory body similar to the Meghalaya Private Universities Regulatory Board (MPURB) to regulate and monitor the functioning of schools and colleges in the state and address the exorbitant increase in the fee structure by some educational institutions, especially the private institutions, which has affected the students community especially those coming from poor families.

Even as the KSU has expressed its disappointment with the present government for its failure to address different issues plaguing the education system in the state, KSU education cell chairman Donald V Thabah said the frequent increase in the fee structure of schools and colleges  is not only irrational, unreasonable but the institutions fails to give justification for increase of fees.

Thabah was of the opinion that the government doesn’t seems to be sincere enough to resolves the problems plaguing the education system in the state.

Demanding the government streamline the education system, Thabah said, “The union strongly urged the setting up of a Regulatory body similar to the Meghalaya Private Universities Regulatory Board (MPURB) which will regulate and monitor the functions of the different schools and colleges in the state.”

Thabah felt such regulatory body should look into issues like exorbitant increase in the fee structure. He also said  the insensitivity of the school authorities to understand the plight of the students and the parents has cast a shadow over the intention of setting up such schools.

Frequent change of the syllabus for different levels (class I-VI) has also created confusion and disoriented the students’ community, Thabah said adding it has hit the transition of knowledge and information.  He pointed out that most schools make their own arrangements for purchase of school books and uniforms with selected retailers and some schools even prints the school with different price tags inflating the original price.

Thabah said another issue is the exorbitant increase in admission forms by some educational institutions without justification affecting the students, especially those coming from lower income group.

The union also demanded implement of the free and compulsory education to all children until they complete the age of 14 in accordance with Article 45 of the Constitution of India.

“The implementation of this program would benefit those students coming from economically backward families and thus would check the high drop-out rate and boost literacy in the state,” Thabah said.

Thabah was also of the opinion that MBOSE like other boards in the rest of the country should adopted the NCERT curriculum so as to ensure that students of the state are at par with other students across the country.

Thabah said the government should set up government colleges in all the districts of the state to cater to the rural population especially those coming from weaker sections of the society.

To meet the ambition of students aspiring to pursue technical education, Thabah suggested upgrading the existing polytechnic institutions into full-fledged Engineering institutions. He aso said the state government should impress upon the North Eastern Hill University to speed up the setting of the proposed Jowai campus to cater to the people from the twin districts of Jaintia Hills.- By Our Reporter
