Congress puts a gag on GNLA leader

Shillong, Sept 25: Embarrassed by the open declaration by the proscribed arrested GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma that the outfit will support the Congress party during the upcoming assembly election 2013, the police Tuesday whisked away the militant leader under heavy security blanket taking extra precaution not to allow the waiting media to speak to him while producing him in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court.

Earlier whenever the militant leader was produced in the court, he used to oblige the waiting media with a freewheeling interview. However during the last such interview, he had given what many in the media described as a “bombshell’ when he not only expressed his intention of contesting the forthcoming assembly election but also supporting the Congress party in Garo hill districts.

On Tuesday, however, the police made sure that the waiting media did not get a chance to talk to the militant leader. Obviously, the political bosses of the Congress were keen to see that this time when Champion R Sangma was produced in the court, he doesn’t further put the party in a tizzy by saying something that would give its political detractors a political weapon to be used during the election.

The police officer escorting the militant leader to the court told reporters, “We have been given instructions from higher ups not to allow him to talk to the media”. Echoing similar views the other policeman in the squad divulged, “We are only following instructions this time, because last time we did not stop you all from talking to him.”- By Our Reporter
