Ensure proper collection of garbage in Jowai: Meghalaya HC tells JHADC, JMB

SHILLONG, APR 12: The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday directed the Jaintia Hill Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) to ensure proper collection of uncollected garbage in Jowai, the district headquarter of West Jaintia Hills.

The order was passed by the bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee while hearing a PIL filed by the Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai against household waste and general garbage not being collected in the Jowai urban township area from February 4, this year.

The prayers in the petition are for regular garbage collection and efficient waste disposal system.

The court said photographs, said to be recently taken and appended to the petition, reveal a nasty state of affairs.

It said though the state has been served and is represented, it is submitted that the responsibility for garbage collection and waste-management is of the third respondent (JHADC) and the fifth respondent municipality (JMB).

The court has directed that the respondent Nos. 3 to 5 be served immediately and informed that the matter will appear a week hence for a preliminary hearing and appropriate directions.

“In the meantime, every attempt should be made by the third and fifth respondents to ensure the proper collection of uncollected garbage and its appropriate disposal in accordance with law,” it asked.

The next hearing will be held on April 20.
