Ex-HSPDP chief quits party

SHILLONG, JAN 29: Former president of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit along with 18 leaders today quit the party.

In a joint resignation letter submitted to the party acting president KP Pangniang on Tuesday, the leaders said, “We have decided to resign from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect.”

The others who resigned include Dr Kara Shen, Shemborlang Rynjah, Grossper Ryntathiang, Pynshongdor Lyngdoh Nongbri, Alestee Diengdoh, Londoner Murphy Sohtun, Dr Bashein Syiem, Elmar War, Clifford Nengnong, Wanhun Massar, Brightstar Marbaniang, Richmond Rapthap, Marcus Lyngdoh, Leading Khyriem, Romen Laitmon, Skhemsing Dkhar, Prain Syiemlieh and Bobby Majaw.

On March 6, last year, Basaiawmoit had resigned as president of the HSPDP claiming responsibility for the drubbing of the party, which could managed to win only two seats in the February 27, 2018-Assembly elections.

Another reason for his resignation was when an MLA of the party took oath as a cabinet minister of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government which goes against the party’s order not to take part in the swearing in ceremony.

Basaiawmoit was a former two-time MLA from Nongkrem constituency.
