Faleiro’s Take: Cong dissension, Garoland

AICC general secretary Luizinho Faleiro addressing pressmen on Saturday (TM)SHILLONG, AUG 10: Brushing aside the internal bickering within the Congress party in Meghalaya as part of a democratic setup and process, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Luizinho Faleiro also felt that the demand for a separate Garo state needs to be deliberated and discussed about the feasibility.

There have been reports that most of the legislators from Khasi and Jaintia hills are reportedly unhappy over chief minister Mukul Sangma’s remark that the performance of Congress had gone down in Khasi-Jaintia Hills while the party has become stronger in Garo Hills under his leadership.

In the last Meghalaya assembly, the Congress seats in Khasi-Jaintia Hills had gone down from 21 to 16 but in Garo hills it had gone up from 7 to 13 seat in Garo Hills Sangma had said.

This remark reportedly upset many party legislators from Khasi and Jaintia hills.

Faleiro, however, said on Saturday such issue is part of a democratic process and that there is nothing wrong if there are differences within the party.

Faleiro said, “Congress is a democratic party so there is nothing wrong if there are differences. But the mantra is unity, discipline and hard work.”

GARO STATE: With regard to the demand for a separate Garo state Faleiro said deliberations and discussions are required for studying the feasibility of the proposed new states in the country.

Falerio said, “A new State cannot be formed just when asked for and deliberations and discussions are required for seeing the feasibility of the proposed new states in the country.”

But Falerio defended the decision of the union government for a Telangana state saying, “The issue of Telangans is being raised since 1956 and the decision was arrived after consultations.”

Falerio refused to comment on whether the union government is open to the idea of dividing Assam and Meghalaya into more states saying that the states and union governments are discussing the issue.

When asked for his take on the Garo state demand, chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “This demand is there for too long and I think people of the state are fortunate to belong to a beautiful state like Meghalaya. “

The demand for a separate Garoland is gaining momentum in Garo Hills as various NGOs have come together demanding a separate state after the union government approved the formation of new Telangana new state.- By Our Reporter
