SHILLONG, AUG 10: Celebration of Independence Day in East Khasi hills district this year will be colourful filled with fun as the district administration has lined up varieties of programme for the people to come out and enjoy.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal told reporters on Saturday, “The East Khasi hills district administration has geared up preparing for the celebration in a big and positive way to allow massive public involvement and participation on that day.”

Goyal said, “This is to give people choices to celebrate and enjoy the Independence Day.”

The decision was taken after the district administration held series of meetings with various stakeholders including the localities, educational institutions and others.

The district administration has urged them to celebrate the day with pomp, gaiety and most of them have expressed their willingness and readiness, Goyal  informed.

Apart from the ceremonial parade and cultural programmes to be held at Polo ground, a variety of programmes such as sports, competitions, magic show, exhibition, food fest and others will be organize in different places of the city to mark the celebration.

“We are organizing these programmes in collaboration with different organizations, localities and schools,” the Goyal said.

Stating that football is one the most popular and favourite game in the state, Goyal informed a football match will be played between Rangdajied FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC besides at Polo ground adding an Arrow Model Show by the Army Forces will also be held at the place. “This will be an added attraction to the people,” Goyal added.

Along with the fine arts fraternity, a painting competition was held recently wherein over 100 children participated. “These paintings will also be exhibited at the painting cum exhibition show to be held at MUDA complex on August 15,” Goyal informed.

 

At Khyndailad, Police Bazaar, giant canvas featuring comic characters like Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry will be the main attraction who will be distributing free toffees to children apart from food codes and releasing of the tri colour balloons beside inspiring movies will be  shown in the different functional cinema halls of the city along with magic shows.

“We believe that such activities can be a great source of inspiration for the children and families to have a good time,” Goyal said.

Elaborating more on this, Goyal said that an evening musical extravaganza will also be held featuring reknown and prominent musical artists – Na La Rympei and Serenity Choir.

According to Goyal, today’s younger generation have missed out the fun of celebrating the Independent Day as it has become a usual practice where people would prefer to spend their time in-house rather than a join the celebration.

“But we want to change this and encourage people to come forward and enjoy the celebration in their own way,” Goyal said adding “I appeal to all sections of society to participate, enjoy and make the day a grant success.”

Goyal also made it clear that all the events are free of cost where people do not need to spend a single penny for the entry.

On the transportation aspect, Goyal informed that around 30 -32 busses will be plying in the different parts of the city for public conveyances.

So far as the security aspect ahead of the Independence Day is concerned, Goyal said, “The police department has already sought additional forces which are in place.” He said, “I see no reason why people should not enjoy on the day.”- By Our Reporter
