SHILLONG, MAY 12: The highhandedness of a police officer came to fore when a farmer from West Khasi hills district alleged he was beaten up inside a police station just because he had inquired the status of a case of a girl who was harassed by some local boys.
An FIR was also filed against the officer in-charge of the police station besides two other personnel.
Donboklang Lyngdoh Mawlong (30) who hails from Mawlong village under Mairang sub-division in the district, sustained injuries on the head, face, jaws, hands and legs after the highhandedness by police.
The incident took place at 10.20 am on May 6, when Donboklang went to Mairang police station to enquire the action taken by the police with regards to harassment of a girl from his village, which took place last month.
“Since I felt pity for girl’s family, I decided to go to the police station to enquire and ask for the medical report of the girl and the case dairy of the assault incident,” Donboklang told reporters on Thursday.
To his dismay his request angered the police inside the police station.
“The Officer In-charge of Mairang PS, H Thabah reacted by saying – stupid who are you, are you the SP or the DC? He then started assaulting me by punching me on the face, on the head and kicking me on my hand and legs,” he said while showing his bruises.
He said, “The OC had also picked up on me for filing an RTI on the PDS distribution in the village.”
After this, he was taken to the Civil Hospital on a police gypsy and on the way two other police personnel also assaulted him inside the vehicle, he claimed.
Stating that he was only released at around 7pm of the same day, Donboklang said, “Due to the injuries, he decided to admit himself in the civil hospital where he was given 3 drips and 28 injections.”
Interestingly, the doctor at the hospital for unknown reason decided to discharge him the next day.
“When I ask for my medical report, the doctor I Ryntathiang told me that I would have to get them from the police station,” he said.
He said he lodged an FIR with the SP of West Khasi hills and Nongstoin police station against the OC of Mairang PS and his two personnel.
When asked, Donboklang said no action has been taken till today. He appealed to the home department and NGOs to intervene into the unacceptable action by the police against him.- By Our Reporter
