SHILLONG, JULY 7: The state government approved constituting of the Fifth Meghalaya Pay Commission, which will recommend a comprehensive pay package for the government employees of the state.
Briefing pressmen after the cabinet meeting on Thursday, chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “We have approved the proposal for constituting of the Fifth pay commission in the state.”
The pay commission will be headed by former chief secretary PJ Bazeley and two retired IAS officers as members – Uttam K Sangma and L Roy.
“The government will immediately issue notification which will indicate the term and reference of the commission,” Sangma said.
The chief minister said the commission once it submits the report and recommendation it will then be examined by the state government, which will accordingly take a call. According to him, the financial implication will be determined based on the recommendations of the commission.
The recommendations of the Fourth pay commission, which was set up in 2007, was implemented in October 2009 with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007. It has then recommended a hike of 32 percent.
Stating that implementing the proposed new pay scale will no doubt be a burden to the state’s exchequer, Sangma, however, added, “We want to ensure that the exercise is based on our commitments towards the employees.”
Because of the ongoing interim ban on coal mining imposed by the NGT, the CM admitted that the usual resources acquired from non-renewable resources like coal is not available with the state at the moment.
He, however, stated all non-renewable resources are bound to get exhausted but it is for state government to augment other resources.-By Our Reporter
