Finally, state CID arrest tainted CM Jha

cmj1SHILLONG, APR 21: Tainted CMJ University chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha ,who filed his nomination papers as an Independent candidate from Bihar’s Jhanjarpur Lok Sabha seat, was arrested by the Meghalaya police on Tuesday in connection with the ‘selling of fake degree certificates’ to students across the country through his university.

Jha was on the run after the Supreme Court cancelled his anticipatory bail on March 7 in connection with cases filed against his university by the then Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary.

CMJ university alleged awarded “fake” degrees to students hailing from different parts of the country including Meghalaya.

Meghalaya director general of police Peter Hanaman said, “Our CID team along with the help of Bihar police arrested Jha from Madhubani area in Bihar this afternoon.” He however refused to divulge any further details.

Hanaman informed that Jha will be brought to Shillong soon for further interrogation in the criminal cases filed against his university.

When he was Meghalaya governor,  Mooshahary had alleged that there had been “mismanagement, mal-administration, indiscipline and failure” in accomplishing the objectives of the private university.

Mooshahary, who as the governor was also the visitor to the private university, had lodged an FIR against CMJ University on April 26, 2013.

The CMJ University  had awarded PhD degree to 434 students during 2012-13, and had enrolled 490 students for the PhD programme during 2012-2013.

Meghalaya’s CID which is investigating the alleged lapses of CMJ University, has unearthed a number of irregularities in the varsity  functioning and registered criminal cases against Jha under section 420, 406, 466, 34, 109, 120 B and 467 of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the FIR against the CMJ University and numbers of raids and arrested, the Meghalaya government has also dissolved the controversial university following the Supreme Court directive to take appropriate action under Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009.- By Our Reporter
