First horror film Dak Bangla

SHILLONG, DEC 8: ‘Dak Bangla’ or ‘Haunted House’, the first ever Khasi horror movie, which seeks to create awareness about the importance of eradicating crimes against women is all set to be screened at an upcoming festival in Mairang.

The movie is about the spirit of a 15-year-old girl, who was raped, killed, and dumped in a cave, who took revenge on the people who committed the crime when they tried to attempt the same on others.

Directed by Kitbok Kharmalki, an upcoming film-maker, the movie was also released by the former Assembly Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai at a function on Tuesday.

“We are going to screen the movie at the Kyllang Rock Festival to be held on December 10-11,” Kharmalki told reporters. He said, “The decision to come up with such a project was not only to entertain viewers but also to create awareness about the importance of protecting women from violence such as rape.”

According to him, the movie is also being made following increase reports of crimes against women in the state.

It, however, took over 2 years to complete making of the movie, which was shot mostly in Mairang, West Khasi Hills District and Pynursla in East Khasi Hills district with a budget of Rs 4 lakh.

Earlier while releasing the movie, Shullai lauded the efforts made by the team of the Umjer Production for coming with such a movie, which aims at educating people on the need to protect and respect women.

He also emphasized the need to promote young and talented film makers in the state because marketing a movie is still a big challenge for them. He said there is a nee to encourage and support the film makers of the state while adding that this kind of support can come only when the people of the state are willing to lend a helping hand by showing interest and appreciating their work.- By Our Reporter
