First state cyber crime police station

SHILLONG, APR 22: The state government has come up with a first of its kind ‘Cyber-Crime Police Station (CCPS)’ to investigate into cyber and internet related crimes, which is on the rise in the state.

The cyber-crime police station was notified recently through a notification issued by the Commissioner & Secretary of Home (Police) department F Kharlyngdoh.

According to the notification, the CCPS will be under the Cyber Crimes Wing of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation of cyber and internet related crimes and its jurisdiction will extent to the whole state.

Informing this on Friday, IGP (Law and Order/Operation) GHP Raju said, “This is in view of the internet frauds and credit card frauds by criminals reported in various districts of the state.”

Investigation of cybercrimes where digital devises such as mobile phones, computers is used to commit offences as well as internet related crimes falls under the jurisdiction of CCPS, he said.

Meanwhile, Raju also informed that as on date in almost all the militancy related cases registered in Meghalaya, the criminals have used digital devises such as mobiles, black SIM cards to commit crimes.

Stating that using of black SIM cards is most common by all militant groups, he said these include sending extortion SMS to people, criminal intimidation, extortion and kidnap case.-By Our Reporter
