SHILLONG, OCT 13: Five days after Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MDC Adelbert Nongrum took over as the Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM), fissure has surfaced with the council’s coalition All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) partner as  KHADC deputy chairman and Hills State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem resigned from the post on Monday.

Justifying his decision to resign Syiem told reporters after he tendered his resignation to KHADC chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew on Monday, “I decided to quit the post due to three main reasons.”

Elaborating on his decision, Syiem said he resigned as a mark of protest against the manner in which the portfolios of the new KHADC Executive Committee under Nongrum were allotted to ARPA members.

ARPA is a coalition of three regional parties – HSPDP, United Democratic Party (UDP) and KHNAM, and is now having the strength of 16 members and the support of an Independent MDC from Nongskhen Grace Mary Kharpuri, who recently resigned from the HSPDP.

According to Syiem the present leadership under Nongrum has cripple the principles in which the ARPA was formed. He pointed out that it is sad that the MDC from Nongskhen was also included in the list of executive members (EMs) submitted by the KHADC CEM to the governor for his approval.

According to him the post of the deputy chairman was never supposed to be taken by the HSPDP.

“The post of the deputy chairman actually was allotted to the KHNAM when the ARPA was formed,” Syiem  said adding KHNAM however refused to take the post which was then offered to the UDP, who also rejected.

Syiem  said, “It is due to unwillingness of the two coalition partners to take the post, the HSPDP had to fill in the post.”

Syiem statement also came as a reaction to reports which stated that the HSPDP has already four members in the new EC by including the posts of chairperson and deputy chairman.

Syiem, who represents the Sohrynkham constituency also expressed his shocked to see some people attending the get together ceremony of the newly elected KHADC CEM on Wednesday last.  He said,“I don’t like what I see on that day (October 8),” Syiem said.

Syiem said he had thought that the fall of the EC led by Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit was due to unhappiness of the MDCs from the UDP.  “But after the election of the CEM, I realize there is something behind the scene as the reason behind the fall of EC led by Basaiawmoit as now it becomes apparent that the fall was not only due to disgruntled UDP MDCs but there are some people from outside,” he added.

Syiem informed that the HSPDP is going to convene a meeting to discuss on these issues on Tuesday.- By Our Reporter
