SHILLONG, APR 7: According to survey, 45 percent of the parents are not giving any vaccination to their children because of ignorance making East Khasi hills district one among the 200 focus districts in the country to achieve full-immunization.

Addressing the inauguration of the Mission Indradhanush held at the Ganesh Das hospital on Tuesday, Goyal said,  “We are quite a learned society, but still I was surprised to know that a survey conducted said almost 45 per cent of the parents who are not giving any vaccination to their children because of ignorance.”

According to Goyal, the government is trying to fill in this gap through a special immunization programme which is going to be continuously held for four months in the district.

Stating that the percentage of fully immunization of children is less than the national average, Goyal said, “That is why this district has been taken as one of the focus district out of the 200 districts in the country.”

Goyal felt that as children are minor and do not know that they need to be vaccinated and felt it is the adults’ duty to give them what is needed for their health care.  He said, “It is the duty of all the parents to ensure the children up to age of 5 years’ gets the right immunization at right point of time.”

Highlighting the special programme, Goyal said the mission is the ambitious programme of the government to ensure that all the children who have been left out during the routine immunization in the respective sub centres like PHCs, CHCs or hospital are covered through a special campaign.

Goyals informed, “This campaign will be held for four months continuously starting from the month of April. All these campaigns will be on the second week of every month and the purpose is to cover either the non covered children or the partially covered children till now.”

According to Goyal, there are almost 10, 000 children in the district who have not been covered or partially covered during the routine immunization.

Goyal also assured all the parents that the vaccines administered to the children are safe. He said, “On this occasion, I would like to call upon all the parents and would like to impress upon and give a faith to them all these vaccines which have been administered are safe vaccines.”

Stating that there might be one odd case of some reaction, Goyal, however, said, “But this does not mean that these vaccines are not safe and does not mean that you have to worry about it.” Allaying fears, he said according to a study such reaction takes place because of the peculiarity of the health of the particular child.

Goyal reiterated that there is no reasons for the parents to worry about the safety of these vaccines as these vaccines have been tested and used across the country as well as world.

Referring to polio, Goyal said for no fault of the children, they get affected by polio because there is some resistant in some pockets of the country.

Goyal said similarly for the immunization, the state government immunizes the child to protect them from the deadly diseases which was prevalent earlier when the vaccines were not available. He informed that is no longer the case now and the government takes the duty upon themselves to see that vaccination reaches out to all children.

Goyal further urged everyone including Asha workers, medical officers to impress upon and speak to parents to see each and every child is fully immunized to the extent that is desirable.

Stating that the effort is also made to go from house to house Goyal said, “We will put our best foot forwards to ensure through this campaign the percentage of immunization goes up upto 90 per cent in the East Khasi hills district.

The Mission Indradhanush, an immunisation programme, was launched in 33 districts of north-eastern states to vaccinate children by 2020.  The mission formulated by the union health and family welfare ministry intends to expand immunisation coverage in India to at least 90 percent of the children during the next five years.- By Our Reporter
