“Fru-Ve” festival kicks off

TURA, AUG 8: A two days fruits and vegetable festival titled – “Fru-Ve” was inaugurated at Tura on Friday by parliamentary secretary public health engineering and urban affairs Noverfield R. Marak..

The festival is an initiative of the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme (IBDLP) and district administration to offer a platform to farmers of Garo hills region.

“It is an effort to promote local produce of the region, which can be taken into next level of entrepreneurial activity in a cluster way or larger through green technologies. It serves as a platform for identifying practices and success of such green initiatives by agro-entrepreneurs and farmers cultivating indigenous fruits and vegetables”, said Marak.

Focusing on government’s initiative to promote green and organic farming, Marak said, “We need to educate our youths on indigenous farming techniques, vis-à-vis encourage them to take up agro-business.”

Marak also  added that  farmers and agro-entrepreneurs can advocate creating a green system in sustainable manner, which will provide them livelihood opportunities. “The festival will create a sense of holistic business approach resulting in win-win situation for both entrepreneurs and buyers,” he said.

In a key note address, West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi said, “Fru-Ve festival has given a platform to reach out to all the stakeholders to take forward the agenda of harmonized, economic and ecological development.”

Terming that the festival is an effort to create awareness on organic farming, Bakshi said, “It serves as a platform for awareness on organic recommendations for various crops and fruits grown in Garo hills.”- From Our Correspondent
