Gang-rape ignites demand for death sentence of rapists

SHILLONG, DEC 19: Shocked and upset over the gang-rape of eighteen years old girl by sixteen boys in East Garo hill district on December 13, the Meghalaya Mahila Congress Committee (MMCC) strongly advocated death sentence to rapists even as it felt that a fast track court should handled all rape cases and punishment meted out immediately.

Voicing its concern over the increasing rape and criminal cases against women in Meghalaya, the MMCC general secretary C Marbaniang informed reporters Wednesday that the committee will submit a memorandum to the government on the Williamnagar rape case on Thursday.

The unfortunate girl was returning home along with her friends from the Simsang festival sixteen rapists accosted and raped her. Fifteen of the sixteen rapists have so far been arrested by the police.

Marbaning said, “They (rapists) should be given death sentence for such a heinous crime.” Observing that the increasing atrocities committed against women are a disturbing trend in Meghalaya, she said, “Reports on such crimes are reported almost on a daily basis from different parts of the state which is of great concern and calls for immediate step to eradicate this problem plaguing the society.”

Saying that the MMCC wants strict and stern action against the perpetrators of such crimes Marbaniang felt that fast track court should exclusively be set up to deal and speed up the prosecution against such cases.” – By Our Reporter
