Ganga sworn in as new Governor

SHILLONG, OCT 5: Meghalaya’s new Governor Ganga Prasad was sworn in at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan here on Thursday evening.

Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Justice Dinesh Maheshwari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Prasad.

The ceremony was also attended by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, his cabinet colleagues, colleagues in the Assembly and senior officials of the state government.

in his short speech, Sangma while welcoming the new Governor said, “We look forward to serve the people of the state together.”

Prasad, a BJP leader from Bihar was among the five Governors appointed by the President on Saturday last week for states which include Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Assam.

Prasad was elected for the first time as a Member of the Legislative Council in Bihar in 1994. He retained the position for 18 years. He has also served as the leader of the BJP and also led the Opposition in the state Assembly for five years.

Former Assam and Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier in January this year, Purohit was also given charge as Meghalaya Governor, after the former governor V Shanmugananthan was removed over protest by Raj Bhavan’s staff.
