MDC seeks action against illegal toll gate

SHILLONG, OCT 5: GHADC Boldamgre MDC Stevie Marak today asked the district council to take action against a lessee for allegedly indulging in illegal collections in the name of the GHADC.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, Marak requested the EM i/c Haats and the concerned departments of the GHADC to cancel the lessee and take legal action against him.
“We cannot and should not allow such extortion in the name of GHADC nor should the criminals doing this be allowed to go free,” he said.
He also urged the Deputy Commissioner, South West Garo Hills District and the Superintendent of Police to stop this illegal toll gate.
According to him, an FIR was filed against the lessee for collecting more than the prescribed amount in the agreement.
He said that the lessee of Ampati Haat (bazar) for the collection of taxes from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council has set up an illegal 24 hour toll  gate at Latri Junction on the way to Ampati and is collecting money from goods vehicles crossing that area and harassing businessmen coming towards Ampati thereby increasing the prices of commodities.
As per the GHADC Haat rules, collection of taxes from markets/weekly markets is allowed only in the market and on market days and no collection of taxes can be done beyond three kms from the main bazaar area.
Nor can collection be made from goods vehicles just passing through, tax can be levied only on goods that are to be sold on that particular market. This is not the first time that this particular lessee has been making illegal collections, he said.
