Garbage dumping ban lifted

SHILLONG, MAR 21: The controversy over the recent urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh remark that Mawlai is a slum was amicably resolved after the Lyngdoh tendered her apology to the residents of Mawlai, a member of the Joint Committee said informed.

“The minister had tendered her apology at a meeting convened by the Joint Committee in Mawlai on Friday,” the member revealed.  He said the minister told the meeting that it was never her intention to hurt the sentiment of the people of Mawlai.

Surprisingly Lyngdoh or the joint committee leaders were not forthcoming when reporters wanted to know the outcome of the meeting.

Earlier on Wednesday, dozens of garbage trucks were disallowed to enter the landfill site at Marten at Mawlai Nongkwar by the residents of Mawlai as a mark of protest against the remark of minister listing Mawlai as one of the 23 identified slum areas in the city.

Following the meeting, garbage trucks were allowed to enter Marten on Friday

During the meeting it was also demanded that Mawlai Nongmali should be included under Mawlai constituency and the landfill at Marten should be shifted to other government land, the member said.- By Our Reporter
