Garo hills hold position of pride in SSLC

SHILLONG, MAY 25: Garo hills outshines other districts for the first time as it found itself in a position of pride in academics as the students of the region  occupied the topped in the list of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and four Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC-Arts stream).

The result of the SSLC and HSSLC (Arts) declared on Wednesday was nothing sort of an ecstasy for Garo hills so long known only for militants’ activities, killings and extortions.

Students from Garo hills proved that despite the problems they encountered they could still excel in education giving hopes to facing similar problems elsewhere.

For instance no one could have bet that the 2016 SSLC and HSSLC (Arts)  toppers would be from Garo hills   .However Anuj Kundu, a student of the Jawaharlal Nehru Higher Secondary School, Phulbari, topped the SSLC while Arienne A Sangma of Don Bosco College (Higher Secondary Section), Tura bagged the first top ten position in the HSSLC.

Both the schools are located in West Garo hills district even though the district secured the third lowest pass percentage at 35 percent in SSLC and 62.87 percent in HSSLC.

Meanwhile, the second position in the SSLC was shared by Devangi Das Purkayastha of St Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong and Shaunak Das of Sherwood School, Tura.

Sundare B Sangma of Don Bosco College (Higher Secondary Section), Tura secured the top second position in the HSSLC.

The overall pass percentage in the SSLC examination stood at 54.10 percent, a slight improvement by 1 percent compared to last year which was at 53.11 percent.

The HSSLC however registered a pass percentage of 74.04 percent, an increased by only 2.2 percent.

Of the 50,126 candidates appeared in the SSLC examination held in 127 centres, 27,119 were declared successful. In the HSSLC, out of 21,083 students who appeared, a total of 15,609 were declared successful.

The pass percentage of the female SSLC candidates is 79.38 per cent and male is only 78.68 per cent while, the female HSSLC pass percentage stood at 85.15 per cent while male was only 78.78 per cent.

Meanwhile, West Jaintia Hills district registered highest pass percentage with 79.40 per cent while South West Garo Hills district secured the lowest percentage of pass with 25.95 per cent in the SSLC examination.

In the HSSLC (Arts stream), Ri Bhoi district secured the highest percentage with 86.61 per cent while South Garo Hills district registered the lowest pass percentage with 44.59 per cent.
