SHILLONG, MAR 17: The state government has directed the East Khasi hills deputy commissioner to convene a meeting with the authorities of the 58 GTC, following a protest by residents of Mawshbuit village yesterday after the army restricted the movement of the villagers passing through their gate.
“The meeting which will be convened by the deputy commissioner with the authorities of the 58 Gorkha Training Centre will take place tomorrow,” home minister Roshan Warjri told the assembly on Thursday.
Warjri said the government is also following the issue with great concern and will take action accordingly.”
She was giving a suo-motto reply after the call attention notice moved by opposition leader Donkupar Roy was accepted by Speaker AT Mondal.
Earlier, while quoting the rules Mondal asked the Roy to come up with a notice as it needs prior permission of the Speaker but the chief minister intervened assuring that he would see that a suo-moto statement is place before the house.
Roy, who stated that in the past, the rules were relax on urgent public matter, sought the attention of Warjri in yesterday’s incident where residents of Mawshbuit staged a protest infront of the GTC’s gate.
Warjri informed that a large number of people, who are mainly residents of Mawshbuit village, had gathered at the gate of the 58 GTC. The residents were led by R Nongkhlaw, headman of Mawshbuit village.
According to Warjri, the village is located adjacent to the 58 GTC and the entry to the village is through the GTC. Stating that the grievance of the villagers arose after the GTC authority imposed several restrictions for the entry of people via GTC gate.
After receiving information, the government directed the district administration to immediately take necessary action and the ADM and deputy SP and police team were sent to the place of incident, Warjri informed.
“It was learnt that the residents of Mawshbuit village has been asked by the GTC to provide the list of vehicles which will not be subjected to checking and only the vehicles from outside will be subjected to this process,” Warjri said.
Warjri informed that the villagers however disagreed to this agreement because it will put their guests entering the village in inconvenience.
Later a written communication was sent by the 58 GTC commandant stating security was beefed up and restrictions enforced following the incident at Pathankot airbase, Warjri said.
The communication was addressed to the headman of Mawshbuit village with a copy to the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner which gave time to the residents of the village to give their views and inputs about this arrangement and they were also invited to a meeting, Warjri stated.- By Our Reporter
