‘Water safe for drinking’

SHILLONG, MAR 17: The state government on Thursday said that the water supplied from the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme is safe for drinking and there is no hazard as reported in the media on the basis of a test report.

Replying to HSPDP leader Ardent Basaiawmoit’s question, deputy chief minister RC Laloo in-charge of Public Health Engineering (PHE) said his department collected samples from various reservoirs and got tested at the Pasteur Institute and found that the PH value in the water supplied in Shillong is within permissible limit.

When Basaiawmoit argued that as to why the same Pasteur Institute gave two different results for the same water, the minister said the government cannot verify the source of samples of water collected for the first test.

The deputy chief minister RC Laloo while replying to another question from UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh, said the PHE department is procuring necessary equipment to upgrade its laboratory.-By Our Reporter
