Using ILP non tribal extorted

TURA MAY 5: Garo hills based ngos have warned miscreants posing as members of ngos and extorting money from non-tribal colonies using the Inner Line Permit (ILP) not to indulge in such activities defaming their organization. The miscreants have been extorting between Rs 300 to Rs 1000 from the non tribal population claiming that they belong to a particular ngo.

The non tribal who have been extorted have complaint to the West Garo hills deputy commission Pravin Bakshi.

The ngos have also issued warning to the miscreants who are extorting money in their name from non-tribal colonies. The miscreants claim to belong either to the Garo Student’s Union (GSU), FKJGP, A’chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO) and Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) while extorting.

The ngos have condemned the extorting carried out by the miscreants saying those involved in extortion has no connection with their organisation.

“We are searching them”, said Tengsak G Momin, the president of GSU- CEC. He said the ngo has even told their  non-Garo friends to inform them  immediately if any one comes to collect money in the name of GSU. He assured, “We will be taking very strong action against them.”

Non-tribal colonies filed a complaint with the district administration saying that unknown people visit their localities at night demanding money. The miscreants first collect information about the non tribal on rent and depending on the family’s size have been collecting money ranging from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1000 from each households.

“These people are just taking advantage of the situation and trying to make money in the process. We would like to inform all to inform us so that action can be taken against these miscreants. They are just using the opportunity to malign our image and cannot be forgiven”, said Pritam Marak, FKJGP president of Garo hills.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, Pravin Bakshi said the administration want the people to inform the officials to curb such activities. He said, “These are very serious offences and need to be handled as such. The ngos have denied any role and we will take very stern action against anyone caught in such act.”- By Our Reporter
