Release members, ngos serve ultimatum

SHILLONG, MAY 5: Thirteen ngos served a week’s deadline to the state government demanding immediate and unconditional release of the three members who were arrested and booked under the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) last year.

The decision to serve a week’s deadline for the release of the three members belonging to two ngos was taken at a meeting of the thirteen ngos held on Monday.

Of the three who were arrested, Readyon Stone Nongrum is the  general secretary of the Khasi Students Union – Lawsohtun Unit (KSU-LU),  Johny Sohkhlet, a member of the KSU and Everson Syngkon, member of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF).

“We demand unconditional release of the three members of the ngos within one week,” Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein said after the meeting.

The demand came after the pro Inner Line Permit  (ILP) ngos who earlier demanded immediate the ILP submitted to the government a 10-point comprehensive mechanism to combat illegal immigration and regulate influx into Meghalaya in line with the spirit of the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act, 1873.

Booked under the MPDA, Johny Sohkhlet and Redyon Nongrum are still lodged in the Williamnagar district jail in East Garo Hills District, while Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) member Everso Syngkon is lodge in Jowai district jail in West Jaintia hills district.

Informing that ultimatum to the government will expire on Sunday, Marwein warned that if the state government fails to meet the ngos demand, they will sit again to decide on future course of action.

It may be mentioned here Nongrum and Sohklet were arrested for their alleged involvement in setting ablaze a tea-stall owner on November 16 last year.

The 50 years old tea shop owner Bishashwar Das sustained 50 per cent burnt injuries after a group of boys’ poured petrol on him and set him ablaze inside his shop at Bishnupur market. The victim died in a hospital outside the state. – By Our Reporter
