SHILLONG, NOV 30: The NPP led ruling Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) on Monday invited Meghalaya Governor to address the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) as the first citizen, past and present, have never addressed GHADC session.

According to GHPA, never in the history of GHADC the Governor has addressed the House.

“We have invited Governor V Shanmuganathan to address the MDCs and the house in the GHADC since the council had never had an opportunity like this in its history,” NPP leader Conrad K Sangma told reporters after a meeting with the Governor on Monday.

GHPA delegation comprising GHADC chief executive member (CEM), Dy CEM, Chairman, Executive Members and NPP legislators met the Governor.

Sangma said, “We feel that as the Governor is in-charge of the district council and the GHADC EC is new, it is most appropriate that he comes and address all the members.” He informed that the Governor was very excited and positive. He assured the delegation that he would be coming to Tura, West Garo Hills District to address the district council.

Stating that there are procedure that needs to be followed, Sangma said, “Now, we will be coordinating with his office, which will accordingly set up the dates.”

Sangma also informed that the delegation has also invited the Governor to inaugurate the Bamboo Mission, a programme undertaken by the GHADC in the last one month, to boost employment generation in the region.

“We told the Governor that we would be delighted if he comes and inaugurates this mission as by early next month we are planning to start the work,” Sangma said. According to him, this bamboo mission is something which is critical because it is targeted towards employment generation and there are lots of land there of the district council.

“We feel that we should utilize it, we should have plantation done and add value to the products so that we can make it commercially viable to compete with the rest of the country,” Sangma asserted.

Meanwhile, the delegation also apprised the Governor on the financial situation prevailing in the GHADC.

“We have also presented before him the current situation and we have also apprised him of the letters submitted for financial assistance to respective departments,” Sangma informed.

Stating that salaries of employees including MDCs is pending for the past five months, Sangma said, “Each month the salary component is over Rs 3 crore and almost Rs 16-17 crore of salaries is pending in the  GHADC.”-By Our Reporter
