GHSMC stages dharna in New Delhi

SHILLONG, JUN 6: In a bid to press the government and re-enforce the demand for separate Garoland State out of Meghalaya, Garo people from have come travelling for more than a 2000 kms to stage a rally and dharna at National Capital, New Delhi.

Rally was organized at Parliament street, New Delhi on Wednesday was participated by people who were dressing in colorful Garo traditional attires.

It was spearheaded by the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) which was joined in hands by Mother’s union, the greatest Student’s body (Garo Students Union) and other NGOs of Garo inhabited areas.

Meghalaya being a Sixth Scheduled state, the rally was also attended by the many Nokmas who are the owners of the land.

On the dharna, demonstrators chanted slogan “No State No rest”, “We want Garoland” “A’chik A’song tangbangchina”, which was heard and echoed in entire Capital which was led by Balkarin Marak, Co-chairman, also carrying various placard.

Nikman Marak, Chairman GHSMC dressed in a Garo traditional dress spoke during the dharna. He ardently pledge for the Garoland state. He told that the demand for Garoland state is now more than a century since 19th century of its inception during Late Sonaram Sangma’s times. He also asked the legislators both from the state and the Central to listen to the Garo’s demand for separate state.

He showed confidence in Constitution and law makers that the voice of Garo’s will be echoed fruition.

He said the struggle for the Garoland state will continue till it sees the day. Further, Roger Benny Sangma, a Garo youth leader wearing Garo Pajar said that Garo people faces problems in day to day life of being deprived in various sectors owing to several factors. He told the crowd that the Law/ Constitution allows creation of separate Garoland state in sync with State’s Reorganisation Act,1956, as had been created state for the same language speaking people of other states.

Rally and Dharna was ended by singing Garoland State’s Anthem and a prayer.
